Vowed Membership

Vowed members (sisters) are women in love with God and attentive to the needs of the world. These women profess vows of celibate chastity, poverty, and obedience.

Vowed membership is open to women 21 to 50 years old who experience a call to live as a Sister of St. Joseph. How does one become a vowed member?

First, there is an acquaintance phase—for both vowed members and for those interested in becoming associates. During this time, one:

Meets with the Vocation Minister
Experiences the Congregation through community events, informal individual and group invitations
Discerns compatibility with lifestyle, mission, spirituality, and lived charism
Decides whether to continue the inquiry process.

To move forward toward becoming a vowed member, one:

Continues dialogue with the Vocation Minister and other mentors
Attends a weekend retreat to further discern vowed membership
Becomes a “candidate” with the community, while continuing to work and remain in her own living situation
Enters a two-year novitiate program where she continues to discern vowed membership and studies the history of the Congregation; at this time, the novice leaves her formal job and begins living in community
Makes first profession of vows (“temporary” vows); continues to discern for at least three more years
Makes final profession of vows.
